Derek Hough gets seniors to ‘shake it all about’ at Twin River

The dancer headlined The Providence Journal’s ‘Life: Boomers and Seniors Expo.’

LINCOLN, R.I. — Derek Hough leaped up the stairs and seemingly floated across the stage, which is as surprising to anyone who knows anything about the dance superstar as saying Red Sox ace David Price can throw heat.

Hough, who is 33, is the six-time champion on the ABC series “Dancing with the Stars,” among other accolades, and he brought a message of “motion equals emotion” onto the stage Saturday at Twin River Casino.

Speaking before more than 200 people at The Providence Journal’s “Life: Boomers and Seniors Expo,” Hough sought early to prove the point of his message.

“Just because it’s kind of my thing, real fast, for those of you who can stand and feel good about it, on a count of three … if you could jump out of your seats, scream and shout, shake it all about, move them hips. Don’t be scared: 1-2-3.”

Much of the audience complied.

“OK, straight away I can see you guys smiling … or you’re thinking, that felt weird … But the point is: that evoked an emotion. And that’s something I like to talk about a lot. The way you move your body affects the way you feel.”

The expo, cosponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, served as a free resource where, under one roof, baby boomers and seniors could get free advice on living healthy and visit booths from local businesses offering information on investing, medical insurance, travel, health screenings, assisted living, even death planning.

You could even buy a golf cart, snack on a cupcake and enjoy a shot of good gin.

Hough’s audience had plenty of questions for the current judge on the NBC series “World of Dance.”

His favorite dance partners on “Dancing with the Stars”? He named three: Bindi Irwin, Kellie Pickler and paralympian Amy Purdy.

Favorite dances? The ones with “the passionate moves,” such as the Argentine tango.

Diet advice? Avoid all processed foods and hydrate — bodies are made up mostly of water and need flushing.

Does he have a significant other? Her name is Hayley Erbert. And yes, his girlfriend dances.
