Velma Teague to host seniors open house – Your Valley

The Velma Teague Branch Library, 7010 N. 58th Ave., will host an open house 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 to introduce senior citizens to new programming planned especially for them.

Drop-in Fridays are designed for seniors. Certain activities will be offered every week – coloring, board and card games, and jigsaw puzzles. However, the library is planning more programs to address the needs and desires of seniors for appropriate programs.

Help with electronics:

• Using your tablets and e-readers

• Downloading library materials to your device

Express yourself:

• Participate in reading a play

• Read poetry

• Listen to a story and add your own reminiscences

• New Gentle Reads Book Club

Cultural enrichment:

• History lectures

• Art appreciation lectures

• Music lectures

• Travel lectures

How to cope with aging:

• Choosing health insurance and health care questions

• Social Security questions

• Medicare questions

• AARP programs

• Choosing a new residence

• Fraud protection

• Scam watches

Memory times for adults:

• Genealogy

• Writing memoirs

• Scrapbooking

Music programs:

• Electronic keyboard and sheet music available

• Karaoke (featuring songs of the 50s and 60s)

• Adult Song Study Workshops with Phoenix Conservatory of Music Teaching Artists


• Bring your needlework, crocheting, knitting or sewing

• Arts and crafts show featuring the art of participants

The library staff has already been in contact with several potential presenters, and welcomes any volunteers who would like to present a program. The library also welcomes suggestions from those seniors who attend Drop-In Fridays.
