Three months ago I was diagnosed with a cancer that kills more than 11,000 American women each year. Today I registered for the 2019 Corvallis half marathon. This is only possible because I’m lucky: lucky to have affordable health insurance with access to talented healthcare professionals, regular check-ups and screenings, and essential surgery without delay; and lucky to live in a community where good care is easily accessible. My job provided this health insurance, but I worked no harder than friends who are waitresses, small-business owners, and farmers — friends who have to struggle to afford even basic care. I’m not more deserving; I’m just lucky.
Kate Brown believes that all Oregonians deserve affordable and accessible healthcare regardless of their job or address. Republican Knute Buehler believes health care should remain a roll of the dice. Though he now claims to support Medicaid, he voted to take healthcare away from 80,000 Oregon kids and hundreds of thousands of families, including seniors and people with disabilities.
Maybe you’ve heard the plea to vote like your life depends on it. In this case, it very well could. For the sake of all Oregonians, I urge you to vote for Kate Brown for Governor.
