Your Healthy Family: What is long term care insurance and why should you have it?

COLORADO SPRINGS – In this Your Healthy Family, we are continuing our series on the challenges of caring for ageing parents.  Ken Jensen owns Amada Senior Care in Colorado and recognizes for many families paying for that care is a big challenge.

Ken explains, “What most families don’t understand is their mom and dad usually 20 years ago, bought an  investment called long term care insurance. We at Amada are experts using those policies to help them pay for care.”

These long term care insurance policies can easily be overlooked, or children may not know their parents have them.  Kens says, “Many military families when they were discharged from the military they were told, ‘you have TRICARE for life, you’re going to have social security, you’re going to have income, but go buy long term care insurance because that will take care of you’.”

Discovering these policies and benefits many people may not know are available is what any good senior care provider should help their clients with.

Ken says, “At Amada we actually bill the long term care insurance company directly.  They will then pay us directly so once we get through what’s called the elimination period, that is like a deductible period, there’s no more money out of pocket for a family.”

For Ken It’s a matter of making sure that seniors get what they have often already paid for.  “Most seniors don’t ever even look at those policies. They just know they pay for them every month and so once they see what the value is and how it works, they are blown away.  I have had seniors literally start crying, because they couldn’t believe this investment they made 20 years ago is going to pay for 100% of their care, it’s amazing.”
